Foot and Mouth Disease Outbreak: Enhanced Surveillance of Gastrointestinal Infections

Burial of animal carcsses produced as a result of the Foot and Mouth Disease could potentially lead to human infection through contamination of water supplies. Careful assessments of the suitability of burial sites was carried out by the Environment Agency and MAFF. The Health Authority is carrying out enhanced surveillance of gastrointestinal infections as a purely precautionary measure.

The results of this exercise are reassuring, but we are keeping a close eye on the situation.
